The Technique

A Gentle No-Scalpel, Open-Ended Technique

The no-scalpel, open-ended vasectomy is performed under local anaesthetic and usually takes approximately 10–15 minutes. A small 4–5 mm keyhole opening is made in the scrotal skin, allowing each vas deferens to be accessed without a traditional scalpel incision.

Each vas deferens is divided and sealed using a hyfrecator. Fascial interposition is then used to place a tissue layer between the divided ends. The testicular end is left open, which is why the method is described as open-ended.

  • No metal clips used
  • No stitches required
  • Minimal tissue disruption
  • Dr Masterson performs the same method at every Sydney clinic

The Procedure, Step by Step

The illustrated steps of a no-scalpel, open-ended vasectomy, the same diagrams Dr Masterson uses to explain the procedure with patients.

1
No-scalpel vasectomy procedure, step 1

A fast-acting local anaesthetic is applied to the front of the scrotal skin and vas deferens using the mini-needle technique, numbing the area so the rest of the procedure is painless.

2
No-scalpel vasectomy procedure, step 2

A single 4–5 mm keyhole opening is gently made in the scrotal skin using the no-scalpel method, allowing rapid healing without the need for stitches.

3
No-scalpel vasectomy procedure, step 3

The left vas deferens is accessed through the keyhole opening and a small section is carefully separated from its surrounding fascia.

4
No-scalpel vasectomy procedure, step 4

The vas deferens is divided and sealed. The upper end drops neatly into a pocket of surrounding fascia, ready for fascial interposition.

5
No-scalpel vasectomy procedure, step 5

Fascial interposition places a layer of your own tissue over the divided upper end, forming a natural barrier that helps prevent the two ends rejoining.

6
No-scalpel vasectomy procedure, step 6

The testicular end is left open. This open-ended technique helps prevent congestion in the testicle and reduces the risk of post-vasectomy pain.

7
No-scalpel vasectomy procedure, step 7

The same technique is then performed on the right vas deferens through the same single keyhole opening.

8
No-scalpel vasectomy procedure, step 8

A small waterproof dressing is applied, with no stitches needed. You rest in the recovery area for about 15 minutes before heading home.

Planning Your Recovery

Most men experience some temporary aching, tenderness, bruising or swelling after a vasectomy. Plan a quiet remainder of the day, wear supportive underwear and use a covered cold pack as directed in your aftercare instructions.

Patients with desk-based or light work can often return the following day if comfortable. If your work involves heavy lifting, strenuous physical activity or prolonged standing, allow approximately 7–10 days before returning to those duties. Avoid sexual activity for seven days unless Dr Masterson advises otherwise.

Seek prompt medical advice for severe or increasing pain, marked swelling, persistent bleeding, fever, spreading redness or any other symptom that concerns you.

Post-Vasectomy Semen Testing in Sydney

A vasectomy does not work immediately. Sperm can remain in the reproductive tract after the procedure, so you must continue using another form of contraception until a post-vasectomy semen analysis confirms that the vasectomy has been effective.

Dr Masterson generally recommends completing the test three months after the procedure and after at least 20 ejaculations. The sample must be collected and delivered in accordance with the laboratory instructions, which commonly require it to reach the laboratory within one hour. Collection options are available across Sydney:

Laboratory availability and fees can change, so contact the collection centre before attending.

Is a Vasectomy Right for You?

Vasectomy is intended to be permanent contraception. It may be suitable for men who do not want children, or do not want any more children, and who are comfortable making a long-term decision about fertility. Dr Masterson will discuss the relevant benefits, limitations and risks during the consultation so you can make an informed decision.

Permanence & sexual function

  • A reversal operation can sometimes be attempted, but it is more complex, expensive and not always successful, so approach vasectomy as permanent.
  • The procedure does not reduce testosterone production and should not affect libido, erections or orgasm. Because sperm is only a small part of the ejaculate, most men do not notice a meaningful change in semen volume.
  • Vasectomy does not protect against sexually transmitted infections, and another form of contraception must be used until the semen test confirms success.

After previous scrotal or hernia surgery

  • Previous surgery does not automatically prevent a vasectomy from being performed under local anaesthetic.
  • Dr Masterson has experience assessing and treating men who have previously had surgery for testicular cancer, testicular torsion, undescended testicles, hernia repair, vasectomy reversal or varicocele.
  • A phone discussion before booking may be appropriate if you have had complex scrotal surgery, have only one testicle, or have been advised your procedure may be technically difficult.

Understanding the possible risks

  • Temporary discomfort, bruising and swelling can occur. Less common complications include bleeding or haematoma, infection, a small sperm granuloma, epididymal discomfort and delayed healing.
  • A small number of patients can experience persistent scrotal pain after vasectomy.
  • There is a small risk the divided vas deferens can reconnect, causing early or late failure. The post-vasectomy semen test detects most early failures before contraception is stopped.

Frequently Asked Questions About Vasectomy in Sydney

Every answer stays visible on the page for search and AI assistants.

Where can I get a vasectomy in Sydney?
Vasectomy Doctors operates 10 Greater Sydney clinics in the Sydney CBD, Bondi Junction, Crows Nest, Macquarie Park, Castle Hill, Brookvale, Leichhardt, Kingswood, Campbelltown and Caringbah. The same doctor, technique and fee apply at each location, so you can choose the clinic that best suits your travel and appointment needs.
How much does a vasectomy cost in Sydney?
The current fee is $850.00. After the stated Medicare rebate of $233.90, the estimated out-of-pocket cost is $616.10. No booking deposit is required. Fees and rebate amounts can change, so check the current fee page before booking.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book directly with Vasectomy Doctors without a referral letter from your GP.
Can the consultation and procedure happen on the same day?
Yes. The consultation, consent process and vasectomy can generally be completed during the same clinic appointment. Dr Masterson will first confirm that the procedure is appropriate and that you understand its permanent nature and possible risks.
Can I drive home after my vasectomy?
Most patients can drive themselves home because the procedure is performed under local anaesthetic and does not usually require sedating medication. You should only drive if you feel well and can safely control the vehicle. Arrange alternative transport if you are anxious about driving or have taken anything that may cause drowsiness.
How long does the procedure take?
The vasectomy itself usually takes approximately 10–15 minutes. Allow additional time for the consultation, consent process, preparation and a short observation period after the procedure.
How much time should I take off work?
Many patients with desk-based or light duties return the next day if comfortable. Jobs involving heavy lifting, strenuous movement or prolonged standing generally require more recovery time, often around 7–10 days. Follow the instructions provided for your work circumstances.
Is a no-scalpel vasectomy painful?
A local anaesthetic is used to numb the area. You may feel the brief anaesthetic application and some pressure or movement during the procedure, but sharp pain should not be expected once the area is numb. Temporary aching or tenderness is common during recovery.
When does a vasectomy become effective?
Not immediately. Continue using contraception until your post-vasectomy semen analysis confirms that sperm are no longer present at the required level. Testing is generally performed after three months and at least 20 ejaculations.
Does vasectomy affect testosterone, libido or erections?
Vasectomy does not stop the testicles from producing testosterone and should not affect sexual desire, erections or orgasm. The amount and appearance of semen also remain broadly similar because sperm makes up only a small proportion of the ejaculate.
Is vasectomy reversible?
A reversal can sometimes be attempted, but it is a more complex operation and pregnancy is not guaranteed. Vasectomy should be considered permanent. Speak with Dr Masterson or your GP before proceeding if you are uncertain about future fertility.
What happens if I am young or do not have children?
Men over 18 may be eligible for vasectomy, but careful consideration is particularly important for younger men and men without children. Vasectomy Doctors currently requires patients aged 18–25 who do not have children to complete a phone consultation with Dr Masterson before booking the procedure.
Can I have a vasectomy after a hernia repair or previous scrotal surgery?
Often, yes. Previous surgery does not automatically exclude you from an in-clinic vasectomy under local anaesthetic. Because anatomy and scar tissue vary, arrange a phone consultation first if your surgical history is complex or another doctor has advised that the procedure may be difficult.
What are the main risks?
Possible risks include bruising, swelling, bleeding, infection, sperm granuloma, epididymal discomfort, persistent scrotal pain and failure through reconnection of the vas deferens. Dr Masterson will explain the risks relevant to you before the procedure.
